Progressive Creation: Discover How Genesis and Science Tell One Story

Progressive Creation, as presented and defended in this book, holds that God brought life into existence in stages across earth's long history. Beginning with the first self-replicating molecule more than 3.5 billion years ago, God periodically introduced new organisms, most notably during nineteen major biodiversification events such as the Cambrian Explosion (540–515 million years ago). He also enabled existing created species to diversify and evolve into new species. Six thousand years ago, in His most extraordinary act of creation, God created Adam and Eve in His image and likeness, endowing them with immortal souls and spirits. We are their descendants.

Progressive Creation affirms the major elements of the scientific consensus of the natural sciences with three exceptions. It also upholds the essential teachings of biblical creationism embraced by Christians since the first century, stated here as follows:

The Tenets of Biblical Creation

God created the universe out of nothing (Hebrews 11:3).
God created plant and animal life in all their major variations "after their kind" (Genesis 1:11–24).
God created Adam and Eve in His image and likeness (Genesis 1:26–27; 2:7–25).
We are Adam and Eve's descendants (Genesis 1:27–28).
God created us to enjoy a loving relationship with Him (Matthew 22:37–38).
The world, as God originally created it, was "very good" (Genesis 1:31).
Sin entered the world through Adam when he sinned, "and so death spread to all men because all sinned" (Romans 5:12; see also Genesis 2:16–17; 3:1–24; Romans 5:1–21).
God has revealed His divine attributes through that which He has created (Psalm 19:1–6; Romans 1:20).
We have a moral obligation to honor God as our Creator and to obey His commandments (Revelation 4:11).
The biblical accounts of creation are inspired texts revealed by God to His prophets. They are true and factual in all that they assert (2 Timothy 3:16–17).
